A Collaborative Foundation for Geographic Data

GeoDanmark is a collaboration between The Danish Agency for Climate Data and the municipalities of Denmark for the production of geographic data and geographic information. The purpose is to create a common geographic administrative and mapping foundation used extensively for planning in both the public and private sectors.

There is a significant need for current, precise, and combinable geographic data within both the central government and municipalities. Many tasks must be solved across multiple municipalities or between the central government and municipalities. Therefore, a common geographic administrative and mapping foundation is essential. GeoDanmark develops, updates, and delivers geographic data and geographic information for this purpose.

The geographic data produced under the GeoDanmark framework provides knowledge of landscapes and cities, as well as accurate information about features such as buildings, roads, streams, and lakes.

In addition to being the common geographic administrative and mapping foundation for municipalities and the central government, GeoDanmark basic data is also open data, meaning it can be freely used by anyone. GeoDanmark basic data also forms the basis for The Danish Agency for Climate Data’s various topographic products, which are widely used in both the public and private sectors.

GeoDanmark basic data can be accessed on The Danish Data Distribution Platform and The Danish Data and Map Supply.

Data Maintenance

GeoDanmark basic data is continuously maintained by The Danish Agency for Climate Data and the municipalities. Each year, a complete update is performed for one region, where everything visible from the air is digitised. The remaining four regions are updated based on designations from municipalities and the state, also known as designated updating. Updates are carried out using aerial photographs produced nationwide each spring.
